PIT Football | Fall Recap

PIT Football’s Fall Season had a record 136 teams register across 26 divisions. PIT Football expanded their coed division to include four skill levels and its flag football program to two, to go along with 20 divisions of touch football.
It was a season of firsts which culminated in some of the most highly-contested championship games in recent memory.

Coed Division 1

Connor McDavids 37 Defensive Touchdown Fever 28

Defensive TD Fever had a two-score lead late as they tried to derail the McDavids from winning their sixth-consecutive coed championship. However, Jordan and Ryan Loewen combined for three touchdowns in the final 10 minutes to wrest victory from near certain defeat in the best comeback of championship weekend.
In total, the Loewen brothers combined for six touchdown passes, 25 points and two interceptions to keep the McDavids’ championship streak alive. The victory also tied the McDavids with the Flying Squirrels for most coed championships overall with seven.
Not bad for a team that started out entirely as free agents!

Coed Division 2

Things & Stuff 33 Fireballs 26

Another coed barnburner as Things & Stuff scored the winning touchdown with only seconds remaining in the game.
The Fireballs thought they had won when the reigning league MVP Ramey Goetz caught her second touchdown pass to put her team up late. However, Things & Stuff drove the ball as they switched to a double-quarterback formation which resulted in Grant Park Pirate standout Luc Rodriques hitting Jason Cassie for a touchdown to knock off the previously undefeated Fireballs!

Coed Division 3

Flipadelphia 21 Nice for Coming 18

Flipadelphia started the season 0-2, including a one-touchdown loss to Nice for Coming in their second game. Since that game, Flipadelphia went on a tear, going undefeated, avenging their loss to Nice for Coming and capping their season with a championship in the process.
Flipadelphia jumped out to an early lead, but Nice for Coming scored three touchdowns in the second half to almost make a miraculous comeback. But on this day the rookie team from Flipadelphia took home the divisional crown in their inaugural season.

Coed Division 4

We Touchdown There 49 Low Xpectations 0

In the first Coed Division 4 championship in PIT Football history, We Touchdown There scores here, there, and everywhere to win in a landslide.
Kunle Tijani threw for three touchdowns, ran for three more, had two interceptions, and seemed to be everywhere on the field in one of the best championship performances in recent memory. Both teams were in their rookie seasons and are comprised of coaches and players of the Winnipeg Wolfpack.
The final was a great inter-squad rivalry game that decided the best touch team on the Wolfpack!

Canadian Flag Football League Division 1

Canada’s Most Wanted 48 Team Manitoba 24

In a battle of the last two National Flag Championship teams, Canada’s Most Wanted won their first CFFL provincial championship.
The defence had two key interceptions and three separate players scored in double digits. National Champion MVP and Manitoba Bison alum Trysten Dyce continued his highlight-reel play, throwing for six touchdowns in the victory.

Canadian Flag Football Division 2

All Gas No Breaks 29 Chapos 25

The Division 2 flag football game was more entertaining than the Division 1 game, as this one came down to the final plays to decide a winner!
The Chapos were trying to capture their second-consecutive flag football title and team captain Jordan Poitras tried his best to ensure that happened, scoring two touchdowns and adding an interception. However, All Gas lived up to their name and didn’t take the foot off the pedal.
Dallas Reis hit Tewodros Mekonnen with his fourth touchdown pass of the game late to eke out a four-point victory in this closely contested battle.

Division 1

Peg City…The Return 25 Polk High 19

In a grudge match game highlighted by some great defensive play, Polk High again came up as bridesmaids, despite a roster loaded with talent.
Not that they did not have a chance! After a very questionable play call in which Peg City turned the ball over on their own five-yard line with two seconds remaining, Polk High had a golden opportunity to end their championship drought on the final play.  However, the pass sailed incomplete and Peg City captured their first-ever Division 1 championship in the process.
An incredible finish to an uncharacteristically low scoring Division 1 game.

Division 2

The Gentlemen 48 Guild of Calamitous Intent The North Bay Years Volume I: The Next Generation 6

The Gentlemen knocked off the top-seeded Guild team with a stellar offensive showing which saw them throw seven touchdown passes.
The Gentlemen used a two-quarterback system throughout the game, something the Guild defence simply could not solve. Former rifles receiver Cam Penner racked up five touchdowns and thirty-one points on the night!
The Guild will ideally return stronger in Winter with a team composed of seven Division 2 rookies. The future is bright…although not on this day!

Division 3

Brewers 32 Guild of Calamitous Intent The North Bay Years Volume II: Older and Wisers Rye Edition 25

The Brewers knocked off the heavily-favoured Guild team by scoring at will.
Led by game MVP Andrew Westwood, who threw five touchdown passes to four different receivers, the Brewers offence kept the Guild defence on their heels. James Teschuk wreaked havoc on the Brewers defence, catching three long touchdown passes for the Guild, but it was not enough as the Brewers knocked off the top seed in the Division in a very entertaining game.

Division 4

Avengers Endgame 47 Dirty Birds 18

After a nearly eight-year hiatus, Manitoba’s greatest team united…wiser, older, slower, fatter.
But despite the age, time off, increasing girth, and numerous injuries that felled the team during the season, the Avengers showed glimpses of why they were the all-time winningest team in touch football history and the only Manitoba team to win a National touch football championship.
Gavin Panchuk helmed the Avengers squad throwing for seven touchdown passes, three to Kevin Ziolkoski’s newly adopted/abducted son Luc Rodriques.

Division 5

Big Baller Brand 29 Frosted Flakes 25

Big Baller Brand looked to be in trouble down a score a halftime, but they mounted quite the comeback in the second half scoring late to put Triple B’s up by one-point.
Frosted Flakes promptly scored to retake the lead, however on the ensuing kickoff, future Hall of Famers Jason Cassie and Bryce McDonald played catch multiple times en route to scoring a lateral return touchdown.
The Frosted Ones still had a chance on the last play for the Hail Mary, however their prayers weren’t answered as Big Baller Brand continues to rack up championships while avoiding being sued by Lavar Ball for illegal trademarking.

Division 6

Filthy Few 33 Gym Class Heroes 6

The final of Division 6 would determine the winner of the best division in touch football!
All four teams who made the playoffs had identical 3-2 records with a record number of tiebreakers instituted to settle divisional placement. As was common on this night, the top-seeded team was cursed as the Gym Class Heroes tried to put up another heroic performance playing iron-man for the game, but unfortunately there wasn’t a lot of gas left in the tank.
Filthy Few was led by the 13 points of Josh Pereira and the four touchdown passes of East Side Eagles standout Danny Harris to add some hardware to their collection!

Division 7

Flying Squirrels 31 North Bay Elites 14

Jon Franklin and Luc Rodrigues did their best Chris Streveler and Zac Collaros impression as the two quarterbacks each threw for two touchdown passes in keeping the North Bay Elites defence on its heels.
There will be no joy in North Bay this holiday season as the Squirrels had three touchdowns in under five minutes to break the game open in the second half. Franklin hit a wide-open Deion Nelson on a post pattern for the dagger when North Bay opted for the little used “nobody cover anyone” defence.
In winning the championship, The Flying Squirrels become the first team to win both a flag and a touch championship in the same year.

Division 8

The Avengers 25 3x PIT Champs 20

Fresh from an amazing coed victory, Ryan and Jordan Loewen were back at in the Division 8 championship where they combined for another two touchdowns and four TD passes.
Not to be outdone, 3x PIT champs also have their own deadly brother duo as Jeremy and Daniel had three touchdowns, six points, and an interception between them. On this night, however, there was no endgame for the Avengers as they prevented the 3x PIT Champs from becoming the 4x PIT champs.

Division 9

Loose Cannons 35 No Punts Intended 33

In what turned out to be the game of the night, the Loose Cannons scored with less than a minute remaining to edge No Punts by two points, in a contest punctuated by some great throws, catches, and multiple lead changes.
Kyle Smith threw four touchdown passes, the last to Joey Faraci late to seal the game. Nick Jessamine led No Punts Intended with five TD passes, two each to Rylee Nepinak and Patrick Smith.
For those that love run and gun football, this was the barnburner that had the fans talking long after this game was done!

Division 10

Down 2 Football 27 Small Footballs 0

The Down 2 Football franchise is now rivalling North Bay as the top franchise in the PIT, having a remarkable five teams playing across the league.
As their teams have expanded, so has the talent level as this team now boasts two players who have finished first in MVP voting. Both of those players featured prominently in the outcome of this game as Fall 2019 co-MVP Jordan DeMerchant threw four touchdown passes, three to 2019 overall league MVP Arminder Warha.
The Small Footballs will be a team to watch, making the finals in their first season of play.  Give these guys a little experience and you will see them shoot up divisions.

Division 11

Fake TDs, No Punts 19 The U 12

The Division 11 final pitted the top two defences in the division against one another, and the low scoring affair was a testament to the defensive strength of Fake TDs and The U.
Brandon Aguiar anchored The U defence with four sacks, terrorizing Fake TD quarterback Todd Hersak all night. Both teams stalled on offence until Skylar Gislason punched a touchdown in late to end the stalemate and complete the perfect season for Fake TDs.

Division 12

Rush 27 D3F 18

Rush has had quite a run the past couple of years, and they added to their championship cache in style, capping off an undefeated season by felling one of the Down 2 Football franchises.
Rush quarterback James Harron threw four touchdown passes, three to Doug Larke in the victory. The MVP connection struck again for D3F as Arminder Warha threw two touchdowns, while Jordan DeMerchant had both a score and in interception.
The MVPs however couldn’t stop the Rush offence from rolling and that was the difference on this day.

Division 13

London Sillinannies 40 #ComeAndGetATaste 24

The Sillinannies captured their first PIT championship and denied #ComeAndGetATaste of their perfect season!
St. James Rods star Nathan Leitao threw five touchdown passes, two each to Tony Ramos and Miguel Leito. James Teschuk did most of the work for CAGAT as he threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more.
The Sillinannies defence did London proud, coming up with five touchdown passes as they are now the most popular football club, surpassing the support for either Arsenal or Chelsea!

Division 14

Cannonball 47 Geeks and Freaks 13

The veteran Cannonball team showed why experience is important, taking out the Geeks and Freaks in spectacular fashion.
Seven different players scored for Cannonball as their spread offence was too much for the Geeks to calculate against. Tim Maguire threw for six touchdowns and ran one in as the game MVP.
Geeks and Freaks will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. After dropping their first three games, G & F turned it on and didn’t have another loss until the final. They figured out the game quick and we are sure this won’t be the last championship game for these guys!

Division 15

Fat Bottom Boys 40 Post Dig Picks Route 6

The Fat Bottom Boys had never registered a winning season prior to the Fall, and they capped it off with a resounding championship victory.
Led by the seven points, two sacks, and five touchdown passes of Brendan Scott, the Boys scored early and often. After the game, the Boys kicked off one of the best championship celebrations, drinking champagne from the trophy, partying it up with the other teams, and shutting down Kickers Sports Lounge in the process.
Congrats gentlemen, you always remember your first!

Division 16

TD Twisters 37 Bleue’s Clueless 12

The TD Twisters completed their first-ever perfect season, leading Division 16 from wire-to-wire.
Led by one of the stingiest defences in the league, the Twisters combined for seven interceptions, a remarkable five by Andrew Little, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Connor Gilhuly spread the ball out on offence, hitting four different receivers in the romp.
Veteran Allan Bloomfield had both scores for Bleue’s who were a little clueless in being able to stop the Twisters from racking up TDs!

Division 17

Back That Pass Up 45 Burland Boys 7

Back That Pass Up added yet another trophy to their case as they took it to the Burland Boys in the Division 17 final that featured the two bottom seeds.
Upsets abounded in this division; however, the Burland Boys couldn’t complete the upset sweep as Dave Colomy threw for five touchdowns – three to Eric Wishnowski – to put this game out of reach early for BTPU.
We anxiously await Tim Doucette to update his Twitter profile with his newest PIT championship shirt!

Division 18

Payworks 20 Vinegar Strokes 12

Payworks pulled a championship upset over the heavily-favoured and top-seeded Vinegar Strokes.
Payworks played a strong defensive game in which its defence combined for three interceptions and two sacks. Game MVP Tim Jones had one of those interceptions to go along with two touchdown passes and one TD run.
Justin Reid replied for the Vinegar Strokes with a touchdown and two interceptions, but it was not enough as Payworks takes home their first PIT Football championship!

Division 19

Free Agents 38 Stone Cold Killas 24

Each season the PIT offers a free agent team for those players who want to get out and have some fun playing touch football. Historically these teams have done very well, and this season was no different! The Free Agents were led by the five touchdown passes by Andrew Glass, three of which were thrown to Mathew Benoit.   The Stone Cold Killas had previously knocked off the top seeded team in the division in the semi-finals but couldn’t get over the championship hump on this day.
Having said that, the Killas do have most teams beat in the lounge. And some killa jerseys!

Division 20

That One Brown Guy 16 Suckskatchewan Seniors 12

Both teams had to run the football gauntlet, playing both their semi-finals and finals in the same night.
That One Brown Guy were heavy underdogs in both their games, having finished the season winless. But that is why we play the game!
TOBG were led by the two interceptions of Derek Hawley and two sacks from Brock Stevenson as their defence kept the Senior’s offence off the field. TOBG knocked off the top two teams in the division, culminating in a narrow two-point victory for the championship.
