Trent Corney’s Training Camp Journal

It was exciting to get the news on the weekend that I made the team. I could tell that after the announcements were made some of the guys started coming out of their shell. The older guys know the process, that it’s a business and at the end of camp a lot of players aren’t going to be around. I didn’t want to assume anything. I texted my mom, texted my dad to tell them I made the team.

I haven’t found a place to live yet. They said I could stay in my dorm until July 1st. I’d like to stay near a veteran guy so I can get a ride to practice. I was thinking about getting a car, but I really want to save my money. I’ve always been like that. I hate spending money. When I was at Virginia I never spent any money at all. At the end of my four years my dad, who gave me money at the start, was amazed at how much I had left.

It looked like I was wearing the Kanye West clothing line where everything looks stylish, but is all ripped up and has holes in it. But it was actually stuff like my grampa’s old ripped up hoodie and a lot of broken-down clothes.

I’m really bad when it comes to taking care of my clothes and my possessions. I’ve lost at least 15 IPod shuffles. I like them because you can run around and lift with them, but I’ve lost at least 15 of them over the years. I’d just completely forget them. Sometimes I lift so hard at the gym it’s like I’m completely out of it. One time after a workout I was so out of it, it was like I was in a coma. I went to Subway, back when I wasn’t gluten-free, and asked for a ‘football meatball’ sub. They were completely confused with me.

I learned a lot at practice today. I’ve got to come more focused, more mentally locked in, because I wasn’t good enough. It’s different than camp because there are so many reps. I came out here with two right-handed gloves today. That pretty much summed up my practice today.

Anyway, I’d like to thank everyone for reading my camp journal over the last couple of weeks. I’m hoping I can make some plays this year and help this team win.

Defensive end Trent Corney was the Bombers first pick, 9th overall, in the 2016 CFL Draft. A product of Brockville, Ont., he played his college ball at the University of Virginia.

Bluebombers.com chronicled Corney’s daily battles through training camp, from the highs on the field to the transition from the college to the pro game. This was his last entry.
