Trent Corney’s Training Camp Journal

I tried to improve on some techniques in the game in Ottawa and I thought I did. There were a few opportunities to make some really good plays and I wish I had made them. Next time I’ll make them.

The tackle we were playing against, No. 55 (SirVincent Rogers), was really, really good. I think he was the top lineman in the league last year. He was legit and playing against him and watching the film is going to help me be a lot better player. It was a good learning experience.

I had a lot of friends and family there watching the game, close to 50 people. It was a bit of an annoying process, though. Right after the game they all wanted to talk to me but I had to go into the dressing room to listen to the speech, to coach talk.

They were all texting me, ‘Come out, come out, come out.’ I had eight different groups of people that wanted to talk – family group, groups of friends – and so that made for an awkward situation because I didn’t know who to talk to first. I just made it around the circle, but once I talked to everyone, they all just bailed on me. I was kinda upset. I thought at least one group of people would want to go out and get some food with me, but they all bailed. One of my friends, one of 50 people, stayed and I went and got food with him really quick. But then he had to go. I don’t know, maybe it was because it was a Monday night, but my friends didn’t plan that well at all.

I had three gluten-free pizzas and some wings. I spent $60 on that meal alone.

The night before the game I went out for dinner with my dad, my uncle and my sister and we went and watched the Stanley Cup at Jack Astor’s beside the stadium. I was happy to see Pittsburgh and Crosby win. I actually paid for the meal. It’s like the first time I’ve ever paid and my dad was so proud. Right when I said I would pay for it, my dad was texting someone. It’s like, ‘Oh my God, Trent is finally paying!’

Over the years I’ve taken so much money out of his pocket. A lot of the reason I am here today is because of him, just for all the meal prepping he did for me over the years. He made so much food. Now that I’m gone, it’s like a whole family has left. I eat as much as a whole family.

So, for me to finally pay for a meal, that was a big moment for him.

Defensive end Trent Corney was the Bombers first pick, 9th overall, in the 2016 CFL Draft. A product of Brockville, Ont., he played his college ball at the University of Virginia.
