Training Camp Journal – Day 6

Trent Corney’s Training Camp Journal

June 3, 2016

Getting into the third two-a-day, a big thing for me is taking care of my body. I feel like my body is telling me I’ve got to do a little bit extra. Today I’ll get in the cold tub, do some stretching and get a nap in. A quick nap, about 45 minutes to an hour-and-a-half where I can get into the recovery process is key. Short naps are good for the mental side, but the longer naps get the hormones going and help with the recovery of my broken-down muscles.

I took sociology in university, but spent a lot of time studying nutrition. I’m currently gluten-free and almost dairy-free also. I used to count my calories and protein content but I’ve been doing this for awhile so I know what I’m taking in every day.

Trent CorneyI had this test done when I was in high school that measured my food sensitivities and it told me what kind of foods I should be avoiding because it affects my digestive system. Nutrition is big for me because I pride myself on being an explosive, speed rusher and being as lean as possible helps me with that. Nutrition ties into everything, from recovery to becoming that finely-tuned athlete I want to be.

The first day when it came time to eat they had noodles and sandwiches and stuff and I told them I can’t really eat this. They put me down on a list and now they have gluten-free options. I probably eat the most on the team and every time I go up there to eat now it’s like they can see me coming and they go, ‘Oh… not this guy again’ because they know I’m about to eat everything they’ve got.

They always have chicken breasts back there and if they have a good carbohydrate I’ll eat a lot of that, like sweet potatoes, regular potatoes or rice. I’ll eat at least 3-4 chicken breasts. One time at dining hall at Virginia I had 15 chicken breasts – they wanted to see how many I could eat. But that wasn’t to my best interests because my stomach was pretty upset that night. There was a time when I had to eat a lot to gain weight. It seems like I’ve really stretched my stomach to the point where I can eat a lot now.

Defensive end Trent Corney was the Bombers first pick, 9thoverall, in the 2016 CFL Draft. A product of Brockville, Ont., he played his college ball at the University of Virginia.

Bluebombers.com will chronicle Corney’s daily battles through training camp, from the highs on the field to the transition from the college to the pro game.
