Training Camp Journal – Day 5

Trent Corney’s Training Camp Journal

June 2, 2016

I spent some time after practice today with Chad Rempel to work on special teams. He’s helping me perfect my technique on punt cover which, in my opinion, is probably the most important and most fun special teams unit. I really want to be on that unit and Chad sees that. He’s pushing me to do a little extra work on that and I’ll do it. He’s been doing it for so long I’ll do whatever he says.

Trent CorneyI played a lot of special teams when I first got to Virginia, but as I transitioned more to the defensive end rotation, they took me off to keep me fresh.

So I haven’t played special teams for a long time, but it’s coming back fast. I know I can run and I know I can hit people. I’ll take whatever role they give me, whether it’s special teams or left bench. Whatever spot they give me I’ll be a positive and good teammate and always be fighting for a better spot.

Being a guy around 255 lbs and who runs around a 4.5 40, I should be able to get some unique matchups and hopefully make some plays on special teams. This year, I want to be a player where my teammates look at me as an energy guy, a positive guy who always brings it.

I want to be running down on punt with veins popping out on my biceps, triceps, quadriceps… veins popping out everywhere. I want it to be so people say, ‘Wow! Look at this guy.’ I want to run down there and maybe after I make a tackle I’ll do a backflip or something.

Defensive end Trent Corney was the Bombers first pick, 9th overall, in the 2016 CFL Draft. A product of Brockville, Ont., he played his college ball at the University of Virginia.

Bluebombers.com will chronicle Corney’s daily battles through training camp, from the highs on the field to the transition from the college to the pro game.
