Training Camp Journal – Day 4

Trent Corney’s Training Camp Journal

June 1, 2016

Nate Collins and Brendan Morgan are University of Virginia guys like me. Brendan played with me for two years at Virginia before he went to Queen’s.

Nate was there earlier than I was but right away he took me under his wing. He’s been like a big brother figure to me and it’s been really helpful in the process of learning.

He’s a positive person with an upbeat personality and one of the funnier guys in the room. He was on my side right from the get-go.

Trent CorneyA lot of guys go back after practice and study for hours and hours and hours. When I get out of the meetings I like to get my mind off football for a while and then I like to do a refresher before I go to bed. That’s when I learn best. It’s intense study and then I call my mom and my dad and maybe talk to some family.

I’ll be watching the basketball and the hockey games and their finals. I like Pittsburgh… I have a buddy, Clark Seymour, who is on the Penguins farm team in Scranton. He’s been going back and forth and I’m hoping he sees some NHL time in the next few years because he’s still young. He’s a Brockville guy. Another good friend of mine from Brockville is Ben Hutton of the Vancouver Canucks.

Hockey’s always been in my blood. It was my first sport. If I wasn’t so much into weightlifting and the physical stuff I might have stuck with hockey.

I’m cheering for Pittsburgh. Sidney Crosby is my favourite player and I think he’s brought more national pride to our country than any athlete over the last little while. He scored that Golden Goal in the Olympics in Vancouver and that’s probably my favourite sports moment.

I’m probably going to watch that game tonight, either here or at the dorms. A good thing for me is I’m an evening lifter so I’ll go into the weight room and turn the TV on in there. It’s like I’m multi-tasking.

Defensive end Trent Corney was the Bombers first pick, 9th overall, in the 2016 CFL Draft. A product of Brockville, Ont., he played his college ball at the University of Virginia.

Bluebombers.com will chronicle Corney’s daily battles through training camp, from the highs on the field to the transition from the college to the pro game.
