Brendon’s Blog – Getting Away From Football

Written by: Brendon LaBatte

Hello everyone, thanks for checkin’ out yet another edition of Brendon’s Blog.

I write this week in a much different mood then my previous ones. Coming off a game where we didn’t finish a team off when we had the chance, and practicing in this Manitoba heat wave has me a tad bit testy, as it does some of my teammates. Losing the game is something that we must get over though. The frustration that I’m sure many of you felt, we also felt. Every bit as mad and then some. Nothing is worse than being on the offensive unit that allowed the opposing defence to score half their total points. However, as bad as it was, the sun did rise Friday morning. After our team rundown that morning, we were given the weekend off to enjoy. I managed to get out and enjoy Grand Beach for the first time ever. Wow!! What a beautiful place, I can’t believe in my three previous years I never experienced it. I was showing off my not so beach body in hopes of correcting my farmers and knee brace tan that I’ve acquired over the past seven weeks. I didn’t really accomplish it, but I didn’t burn so that’s a win in my books.

The weather this weekend was great, up until Sunday. After a brief shower the sun came out again. This time it would eventually force me into submission after only 11 holes of golf. The conditions became sauna like and after a few bad swings in a row commencing with the (frowned upon) club throw, my patience wore thin and I left the course very disgruntled. I swore to sell my clubs and take up fishing as my part time hobby. Once my head cooled (both literally and figuratively), and upon further consideration I do still plan to work on my golf game in my spare time. I’d like to get into fishing but I figure until my body can no longer endure the physicality of golf (the sore hands, dodgy elbows, and tight back hindering my game) I better enjoy it.

Thanks for checking out my blog again, as always, I appreciate you taking the time to read it. I stayed away from football in this installment because there weren’t many positive feelings that came to me upon reflection of the game against Calgary. That said, I believe there is no such thing as a bad day on the football field, only bad plays. Each and every time we are able to set foot on the field we are privileged to do so. When things go wrong as they do on occasion, and we don’t get the final outcome that we would have liked, it’s easy to be negative and dwell on things. It’s important that we learn from our mistakes and bad plays to ensure that they are prevented in the future, but it’s also important that we remember how lucky we are to do what we do.

Thanks again,
