Bombers mourn passing of Orlando Bobo

Bobo died Monday, May 14 at a Dallas hospital as a result of heart and liver failure. He was 33 at the time of his passing.

Bobo was a member of the Blue Bombers in 2004. He made his CFL debut on July 8 versus the Saskatchewan Roughriders and started a total of a total of 16 regular season games that year. His steady played helped running back Charles Roberts rush for 1,522 yards that season. Bobo also spent time in the NFL, including a stint with the Baltimore Ravens.

“We are all extremely saddened at the news of Orlando Bobo’s passing,” said Bombers President and CEO Lyle Bauer. “Orlando was an outstanding football player, and more importantly, an outstanding person. The whole Bomber family is in mourning over his death.”

Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman, who signed Bobo to play with the football club, said that while Bobo spent only a brief time in Winnipeg, he made his presence felt on and off the field.

“Our condolences go out to his family,” Taman said. “It’s a tremendous loss for them and everyone who knew Orlando.”

Current Bomber linebacker Barrin Simpson was introduced to Bobo a couple of years ago by his brother, Antoine Simpson, who was a college roommate of Bobo’s.

“I was really shocked,” Simpson said of the news of Bobo’s death. “He was only 33.

“My heart really goes out to his family. He was a swell guy from what I knew.”

Funeral services for Bobo will be held Monday, May 21 in Starkville, Miss.
