Training Camp Journal – Pregame June 12th

Trent Corney’s Training Camp Journal

June 12

OTTAWA – This is going to be a fun one. I’m from Brockville, which is 15 minutes from here and I’ve got a lot of family and friends coming.

I’m trying to get as many tickets as I can. My dad just texted me and I’m going to need more tickets than I thought. I need around 15 tickets in total, but I’ve got another 20 or so people who have already bought tickets. So I’m going to have about 40 people coming to the game, about half family members, half friends.

At Virginia the most I ever saw somebody get was eight tickets. They gave us four there, but guys had people coming every game and so it was hard to get teammates’ tickets. The most I had at a game there was five or six.

Trent CorneyI’m going out for dinner with my dad and uncle tonight. At Virginia you couldn’t do anything like that. It was just so controlled, every second we were doing something and it was so extreme I couldn’t even see my parents before the game, only after. I like the set up in the CFL better because they treat us like adults. It was like the military in Virginia. Everyone has a certain way to prepare for games but there we all had to do it the same way.

I’d like to light somebody up in the game so I could get a little grin on the faces of my family and friends in the crowd. I’m not sure how long I’m going to be in the game, so I just want to make sure I do something so they’ll notice me. I hope they can remember me doing something significant.

Somebody asked me about having a sack dance. I can’t one-up Jamaal Westerman’s sack dance… I love his dance. It’s pretty sweet. If I could consistently get sacks then I’ll come up with something. But right now I’m just another guy out there. You’ve got to earn it.

Defensive end Trent Corney was the Bombers first pick, 9th overall, in the 2016 CFL Draft. A product of Brockville, Ont., he played his college ball at the University of Virginia.

Bluebombers.com will chronicle Corney’s daily battles through training camp, from the highs on the field to the transition from the college to the pro game.
