He Wore It Well: Art Stevenson, 1937-41

The Bombers have long had success harvesting talent from the U.S. Midwest, from the likes of Fritz Hanson to the legendary Ken Ploen. Stevenson came to the Bombers after starring at Hastings College in Nebraska and made an immediate impact as an all-star. Stevenson did a bit of everything as a halfback, flying wing, quarterback and kicker, so much so that he was the West Division’s leading scorer in 1941. Stevenson appeared in four Grey Cups in his five years with the Bombers, and kicked the winning points in a win over Ottawa in the 1939 championship.

Notable:

Henry Janzen won at all levels in football locally, joining the Bombers from the Weston Wildcats junior program in 1959 and was a part of three Grey Cup championships with the Bombers in 1959, 1961 and 1962. After his retirement, he coached the University of Manitoba Bisons, leading them to back-to-back Vanier Cup titles in 1969 and 1970, and later became the dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation Studies.

FYI:

Sean Salisbury has a Grey Cup ring from the 1988 championship, but his days in Bomber colours were short-lived. He came to Winnipeg in September of ’88 after his release from the Indianapolis Colts and, with a team dominated by its defence, did enough to guide the club to the title. But a year later he had run afoul with GM Cal Murphy and had distanced himself from his teammates and was released late in the season. By 1990 he was back in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings and then the San Diego Chargers.
