Training Camp Journal – Day 2

Trent Corney’s Training Camp Journal

May 30, 2016

We installed a lot more stuff today and it was all new for me, so I wasn’t playing as fast out there as I would have liked.

The biggest thing with me is trying not to get too high or low after practice. One of the best sayings I heard from a coach after a practice was, ‘It’s never as good as it seems and it’s never as bad as it seems.’ The best thing is to just soldier on, take every day with a grain of salt and then try to take some things you can incorporate into the next practice.

Trent Corney & Louie Richardson I’m trying to figure out what the best time is for me to get a lift in every day, but the veterans tell me you don’t want to overdo it. Ian Wild and Louie Richardson were giving me advice on this. They said, ‘We know you want to lift all the time, but the practices are going to start to become really taxing on your body and you’ve got to be smart when it comes to the weight room.’ At Virginia we had mandatory lifts… so this is really weird. Now I’m trying to figure that out.

I saw Ian doing these Nordic stretches where someone holds your heels down and you feel it in your hamstrings and then you pull it back up. Most of the guys were only going a few inches, but he was going all the way to the bottom and pulling himself just by his hamstrings. I came to him after practice and said, ‘Man, I’m so jealous. How did you do that?’ That’s so impressive. I want to train with him because it seems like he’d be the best in terms of injury prevention.

Louie Richardson is one of my best friends already. We have the same mentality and he has this energy that is very infectious. He just boosts everyone’s morale. He took me under his wing on day 1 and he’s been around awhile so I’m going to listen to him because I already trust him.

Defensive end Trent Corney was the Bombers first pick, 9th overall, in the 2016 CFL Draft. A product of Brockville, Ont., he played his college ball at the University of Virginia.

Bluebombers.com will chronicle Corney’s daily battles through training camp, from the highs on the field to the transition from the college to the pro game.
