Career Notes & Stats
The Blue Bombers signed Schmitz on May 4, 2023 after selecting him in the second round, 17th overall, in the CFL’s 2023 Global Draft.
Originally from Bermuda, Schmitz and his family moved to St. Louis when he was 16 but he managed to play just a half season of high school football after being in a car accident just prior to his senior year.
He kicked off just 11 times at Jacksonville State in his one season there, but kept working at his craft before landing a free agent tryout with the Denver Broncos.
That was followed by tryouts with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers and kept attending annual kicking camps, where he caught the eye of the Blue Bombers scouting staff.
