Special Teams Coordinator

Mike Miller enters his second season on the coaching staff as special teams coordinator after being named to the position on January 8, 2024.

Miller moved directly from the playing ranks to a position on the coaching staff after spending the 2023 season working with the specialists in a non-playing role after being injured in training camp.

In 2024 the Blue Bombers ranked first in opponent punt return yardage (9.6 yards per return) and tied for first in opponent kickoff return average (20.0 yards) and were one of only two CFL teams, along with B.C., to not surrender a kick return touchdown.

As well, the Blue Bombers finished tied for seventh in punt return average (10.1 yards) and eighth in kickoff return average (20.6) and sixth in net punt return average (36.4).

Placekicker Sergio Castillo was named the club’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player for a second consecutive season after connecting on 79.7 percent of his field goals (51-of-64). His 51 successful field goals was the third highest in Blue Bombers history and he also established a new CFL record with 11 field goals of 50 yards or more, including two makes from 60 yards – breaking the previous team record of 58, first set by Bernie Ruoff in 1975 and tied by Justin Medlock in 2016.

Miller began his outstanding playing career in Edmonton in 2011 as undrafted prospect out of Acadia University.

During his days in Edmonton, he established himself as a superb contributor on special teams, further building on that reputation after joining the Blue Bombers in 2017. Miller retired as the CFL’s all-time leader in special teams tackles with 226, a record first held by Blue Bombers President and CEO Wade Miller (185) before he was passed by Jason Arakgi (190) in 2016. Miller became the all-time leader in 2021.

Miller was twice named the Blue Bombers Most Outstanding Special Teams Player (2019, 2021), was the team’s Most Outstanding Canadian in 2019 and was selected as the West Division’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2019 and 2021. He is a three-time Grey Cup champion, having won with Edmonton in 2015 and with the Blue Bombers in 2019 and 2021.
