The list of unbeaten teams is shrinking but still stands at nine across three divisions as the Winnipeg High School Football League readies for another week of action.
Here are some Week 3 storylines to keep an eye on:
- There are four unbeaten teams in the John Potter (AAA) Division – the Dakota Lancers, Grant Park Pirates, Sturgeon Heights Huskies and defending champion St. Paul’s Crusaders. Dakota meets 1-1 Vincent Massey this week, while Grant Park will face Sturgeon and the Crusaders will be at Oak Park to face the winless Raiders.
In Vidruk (AA) Division, the Dryden Eagles and Kelvin Clippers are both 2-0. Dryden is home this week to Crocus Plains (1-1), while Kelvin welcomes River East (1-1).
And in the Currie (A) Division three undefeated squads remain: the St. John’s Tigers, Daniel McIntyre Maroons and Beaver Brae Broncos of Kenora are all at 2-0. The Maroons will face winless Maples, St. Norbert (0-2) is at Beaver Brae while St. John’s is meeting Tec Voc (1-1). - It be worth tracking the play of Kelvin QB Daniel Moroz this week. Moroz, who is starting as a Grade 10, set a new AAA/AA record last week by throwing for 424 yards and five TDs in a victory over St. Paul’s AA. Moroz, not surprisingly, leads his conference in passing with these gaudy numbers after just two games: 31 of 48 for 752 yards with seven TDs and four interceptions.
- Fort Frances Muskies running back Sekina Scheibler is also off to a torrid start through two weeks. He leads all WHSFL rushers with 377 yards on 38 carries – a 9.9-yard average – for six touchdowns.
Two games the WHSFL has singled out for mention this week:
- The 3rd annual Never Alone Foundation Game featuring Garden City and Sisler, Thursday night at North Winnipeg Nomads Field. Over the last two years, the ‘McPhillips Bowl’ has raised over $7,000 for the foundation to help in the fight against cancer. The game will also feature a tribute to past Spartan coaches.
- The second game features St. John’s and Tec Voc on Saturday and the game will honour the Mama Bear Clan Patrol, a community activist/watch group that spreads love around the Main Street/North Point Douglas Area.

POTTER DIVISION
Offence
Liam Prendergast, QB, Sturgeon: Completed 11 of 21 passes for three TDs and ran nine times for 28 yards and a score in the Huskies win over Garden City
Defence
Chris Grouette, DE, Sisler: Racked up three sacks and three tackles while forcing a fumble in the Spartans victory over Steinbach.
Special Teams
Joel Patterson, P, Garden City: Had eight punts, averaging 38.5 yards, and a 95-yard single in their loss to Sturgeon.
VIDRUK DIVISION
Offence
Daniel Moroz, QB, Kelvin: Grade 10 pivot was 18 of 29 passes for a shopping 424 yards and five TDs in win over St. Paul’s AA
Defence
Brenden Baryiski, LB, River East: Finished with nine tackles, a sack and an interception win their win over Vincent Massey Brandon.
Special Teams (tie)
John Saville, RB/LB, Neelin: Finished with three special-teams tackles and a 112-yard missed field goal return touchdown in win over Miles Mac.
Jarrett Hicks, QB/KR, Dryden: Had an 83-yard kickoff return and 102-yard punt-return TD in Dryden’s win over Elmwood.
CURRIE DIVISION
Offence
Chase Neufeld, RB, Beaver Brae: Rumbled for 247 yards along the ground in a victory over Fort Frances.
Defence
Aaron Ross, DE, Tec Voc: Finished with seven tackles, 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery in the Hornets victory over St. Norbert.
Special Teams
Adam Urciuoli, P, Maples: Punted six times for 180 yards and registered two tackles in the Marauders loss to St. John’s.
