Born in Dominion City, Gordon Lawson attended Kelvin High School and then began his work in the banking industry and serving on a number of board of directors with various companies around Winnipeg. Lawson also played an active role in sports administration, serving as president of the Grain Exchange Curling Club in 1939, the Niakwa Golf and Country Club (1950-51) as well as the Winnipeg Football Club in 1960-61.
