Quick Hits | TOR 21 WPG 48

5 Quick Takes on the Bombers win over the Toronto Argonauts:

1. The Bombers moved to 4-0 with a lopsided 48-21 victory over the Argos on a spectacular Friday night at IG Field in front of 24,187 – their best start to open a year since posting a similar record at the start of 2003. Toronto, meanwhile, falls to 0-4.

2. The game started in spectacular fashion for the Bombers as Lucky Whitehead returned the opening kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown to give the home side a 7-zip lead before the game was 15 seconds old.

The Bombers special teams unit almost provided an encore a few minutes later as Charles Nelson returned a punt after the Argos first possession 84 yards down to the Toronto four-yard line, setting up a Matt Nichols-to-Andrew Harris TD. And with that the Bombers had a 14-0 lead with the offence having run just one play.

The Bombers led 37-6 at halftime and did take their foot off the gas in the second half, as the Argos punched back to do a little cosmetic scoreboard surgery with touchdowns by Armanti Edwards and Derel Walker, who had two scores on the night.

3. Matt Nichols posted some solid numbers for the Bombers, throwing for three touchdowns in the first half – four yards to Harris, 38 yards to Darvin Adams and 67 yards to Nic Demski – and finished 18 of 24 for 209 yards before giving way to Chris Streveler.

Toronto’s McLeod Bethel-Thompson finished 21 of 38 for  yards, with three TDs, breaking the Bombers streak of two games without giving up an offensive score.

4. Andrew Harris was his usual workhorse self for the Bombers, finishing with 14 carries for 116 yards, while also pulling in five catches for seven yards and a TD. In the process, he eclipsed the 8,000-yard rushing mark in his career.

5. The Bombers are in the midst of a five-game run against East Division opponents. Winnipeg is home again next Friday against the Ottawa REDBLACKS and then hits the road for back-to-back road games in Hamilton on July 25 and Toronto on August 1.
