The Canadian Football League has once again lifted the veil of secrecy a smidge to reveal some potential future stars of the three-down game.
CFL headquarters asked its nine member clubs, including the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, to make public 10 players from their negotiation list on Wednesday – the second such reveal of the calendar year.
Each team can have up to 45 players – primarily NCAA prospects or players on National Football League rosters – on their negotiation lists. The lists were for years confidential, but this past year the league opted for more transparency in an effort to create some offseason discussion among its fan bases.
Just FYI, included among the 10 names the Bombers made public in the initial reveal in February were defensive back Marcus Sayles, who became the club’s Most Outstanding Rookie Player, quarterback Chris Streveler, who started the first three games of the season when Matt Nichols was injured and solidified himself as the club’s No. 2 pivot, and wide receiver Corey Washington, who caught a spectacular TD in the club’s regular season finale in Edmonton.
The latest 10 players whose names were made public by the Bombers (their choice) are:
CFL teams use negotiation lists to, in a sense, stockpile the rights to American talent. Once a player – whether he is playing college football or has been through an NFL training camp – is put on a team’s neg list, they own his CFL rights as long as his name remains on the 45 among the list. Teams do occasionally trade neg-list players, they can also be added or removed at any time and the lists are constantly evolving.
Here’s a brief look at the players who could one day be wearing blue and gold:
