The pretenders are dropping and the contenders stepping up as the Winnipeg High School Football League has reached the semi-final stage of the playoffs.
There are 16 teams remaining in the four playoff brackets: the Anavet Bowl, the CTV Bowl, the Canad Inns Bowl and the WHSFL Bowl.
Here’s a look at some of the storylines as the varsity playoffs have reached the semi-final round:
The unbeaten St. Paul’s Crusaders and Vincent Massey Trojans, who lost by a single point to the Crusaders in Week 1, are still on a collision course. The Crusaders won their opening playoff game 68-0 over the Dakota Lancers while the Trojans knocked off the Garden City Fighting Gophers 37-14.
St. Paul’s faces Sturgeon Creek, which knocked off the Oak Park Raiders in Round 1 by a score of 34-19; Vincent Massey will meet the Murdoch MacKay Clansmen, who eliminated the Grant Park Pirates 25-9.
The River East Kodiaks eliminated the previously-unbeated Vincent Massey (Brandon) Vikings 13-4 last week to advance to face the Kelvin Clippers, who edged the Sisler Spartans 34-19, while two teams who blanked their opponents in their openers – St. Paul’s (AA), which crushed the Crocus Plains Plainsmen 36-0, will meet the Steinbach Sabres, who hammered the Miles Mac Buckeyes 31-0.
The Dryden Eagles remain unbeaten after winning their quarterfinal 46-12 and will face the Churchill Bulldogs, who eliminated the West Kildonan Wolverines 30-7, while the Elmwood Giants face the Portage Trojans in the other semi-final. Elmwood advanced with a 19-0 win over the Lorette Scorpions; Portage moved on after a 22-14 victory over the St. Norbert Celtics.
Kildonan East will meet the Tec Voc Hornets in one semifinal – the Reivers getting a first-round bye; the Hornets moving on after a 16-1 win over the Daniel McIntyre Maroons while the St. John’s Tigers, who mauled the Fort Frances Muskies 40-6, will line up against the Beaver Brae Broncos of Kenora after they sent the Maples Marauders packing with a 42-12 win.
