Rifles Miss Playoffs With Two Games to Go

The Winnipeg Rifles have two games left on their Prairie Football Conference schedule to try and finish 2016 on an upswing.

The Rifles were officially eliminated from the Canadian Junior Football League playoff picture last weekend in a 69-14 loss to the Calgary Colts, who improved to a perfect 7-0 on the season. Winnipeg, meanwhile, fell to 2-5.

The Rifles are on the road this Saturday in Edmonton to face the Huskies, 4-3, and then wrap up their season at home to the 6-1 Saskatoon Hilltops. That game will be held at Charlie Krupp Stadium here in Winnipeg.

Last weekend the Colts rolled up 563 yards of offence against the Rifles, including a whopping 334 along the ground as they built a 22-1 lead after one quarter and were ahead 52-1 at halftime.

The Colts were led by running backs Dylan Minshull, who rushed 12 times for 161 yards and three touchdowns while Xavier Ramsay had 116 yards on nine carries and two more scores. Calgary also got receiving TDs from Cole Bazinet, Jesse Kuntz and Dallas Burke, while Jordan Gabriel-Cannon also scored along the ground.

Scoring touchdowns for the Rifles were wide receivers Zach Regert and Cole Chowen, both on strikes from quarterback Jonathon Remple, who completed 19 of 31 passes for 203 yards. Regert led the Rifles with six receptions for 127 yards.
