ACQUIRED – The Blue Bombers signed Johnson as a free agent on April 29, 2008.
2009 (WPG) – Jovon Johnson took the next step in becoming a star cornerback in CFL in 2009, starting all 18 games in that spot for the Blue Bombers and being named the team’s Most Outstanding Player for 2009. Johnson finished the season with 75 defensive tackles, six interceptions (2nd on the team to Lenny Walls) –returning one for a touchdown, and picked up one tackle on special teams. Johnson was named to the CFL All-Star Team for the first time in his career. Not only did he solidify himself as a shutdown cornerback, but he also developed into one of the league’s top return threats. He returned 65 punts for 593 yards and one touchdown, while also returning three missed field goals for 203 yards and one touchdown (118-yarder vs Edmonton, Oct 2, 27-17 W). Johnson won the Special Teams Player of the Week in week’s 14, 15 and 17.
2008 (WPG) - Johnson played very well in his first season with Winnipeg. He started 17 of 18 regular season games and was tied for third on the club with 56 defensive tackles. He showed off his ball-hawking skills with three interceptions on the year – two of which he returned for touchdowns. Johnson was third on the club with five pass knockdowns and tied for second on the team with three tackles for loss. Johnson added two forced fumbles as well as two fumble recoveries. He also got some work as a returner. Johnson brought back seven kickoffs for 148 yards and 15 punt returns for 152 yards.
2007 (NFL/CFL) – Johnson attended training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but was released prior to the start of the season. He joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Oct. 5 and played in two regular season games for the Riders.
2006 (NFL) – Johnson was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent 2006 and played in three games for the Steelers that season, registering two total tackles.
COLLEGE – Johnson ranked third in career interceptions at Iowa with 17 and totaled 32 career pass break-ups. His six interceptions during the 2003 season were the most by an Iowa player since the 1996 season. He was voted to first-team All-Big 10 Team in 2005.
PERSONAL – Johnson played quarterback and defensive back at Mercyhurst Prep.
