Offensive Line Coach
Pat DelMonaco is entering his third season as the Blue Bombers’ offensive line coach.
Despite having to use two different primary running backs due to injury last season, the Blue Bombers’ offensive line was a consistent group as they helped both Fred Reid and Chris Garrett rush for a combined 1,335 yards on the ground. DelMonaco saw two of his linemen named to the East Division All-Star Team in Glenn January and Brendon LaBatte, with LaBatte also being named to the CFL All-Star Team for the first time in his career.
In his first season as coach of the offensive line, DelMonaco’s troops paved the way for Fred Reid to amass a league-high 1,396 rushing yards while also helping the offence as a whole register an average of 365 yards per game. The Bombers finished second in almost every rushing category and also led the league in average gain per rush with 6.6 yards. Under DelMonaco’s tutelage, LaBatte was named to the East Division All-Star Team for the second time in his career.
DelMonaco joined the Blue and Gold after a successful tenure at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in upstate New York where he began in 2003 as the club’s offensive line coach, as well as the coach of the extra point and field goal units. In addition, he was Rensselaer’s offensive coordinator from 2005-2009.
In 2008, DelMonaco helped guide Rensselaer’s offence to lead the Liberty League in scoring (29.8 points per game), passing offence (265.5 yards per game) and finish second in total offence (372.7). Six offensive student-athletes earned All-League honors, including two offensive linemen and quarterback Jimmy Robertson who was also named the Offensive Player of the Year.
In 2007, DelMonaco directed an offence that averaged 27.5 points per game and 395.1 yards per game. The Engineers averaged 133.6 yards rushing and 261.5 yards passing per game and ranked among the league leaders in the Liberty League in scoring offence, passing offence, total offence, passing efficiency and sacks against (18). Nationally, Rensselaer was 29th in team passing efficiency, 35th in passing offence and 57th in total offence.
At season’s end, five offensive players earned All-League honors, including two First Team selections, two garnered All-Region recognition and one – offensive lineman Dave Dillen – was named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American.
In 2005, RPI led the league in scoring (33.5 points per game) behind Robertson who was named Rookie of the Year.
DelMonaco – whose offensive line allowed only six sacks the entire 2004 season – joined the Engineers from Hudson Valley Community College where he coached the offensive line for two years and the quarterbacks during his final year. In between his second and third years, DelMonaco was a graduate assistant helping with the offensive line at the University of Illinois.
As a student-athlete, the Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. native played centre at the University of Albany from 1996-2000, captaining the team as a senior. During his four years, his team posted a 35-7 record and won two Eastern Football Conference Championships (1997, 1998).
DelMonaco earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 2000 from Albany. He and his wife Kelly have two children – Julia and Pasquale – and reside in Winnipeg year-round.
