Crowton joined the Tigers after a two-year stint as the offensive coordinator at Oregon, transforming the Ducks into one of the top offenses in the nation and capturing a Pac-10 Championship in 2006.
Crowton joined the Oregon staff after a four-year stint as Brigham Young University head coach, guiding his alma mater to a 26-23 record, including a 12-2 mark in 2001 which was capped off with an appearance in the Liberty Bowl.

In 1998, Crowton's team employed one of the most potent offenses in the nation as the Bulldogs ranked No. 1 in the nation in passing yards (432.1 per game) behind All-America quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate, Tim Rattay. Louisiana Tech finished the year ranked No. 2 in the nation in total offense (542 yards per game).

He then served as passing game coordinator at Western Illinois in 1987, followed by offensive coordinator at New Hampshire, quarterbacks coach at Boston College – where he served under current New York Giants head coach, Tom Coughlin – and offensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech. Crowton was elevated to head coach at Louisiana Tech the following year.
