Each week a Blue Bombers player will answer questions from fans. This week, quarterback Steven Jyles steps up to answer your questions.
Steven, welcome to Winnipeg. Have you been in Winnipeg yet?
No, I haven't had a chance to explore Winnipeg yet. I have only been there to play in a football game but have heard a lot about the city and the passionate fans there. I look forward to checking it all out very soon.
Welcome the Bomberland Steven, What were your first thoughts when you heard you were coming to the Big Blue? I’ll bet you will look forward to the Labour Day Classic in Regina. Wishing you all the best wearing the Blue and Gold!
My first thought was wow! Winnipeg is a good football team that’s starting with a new beginning. It's a blessing to be allowed to experience this with my new teammates. It’s an honor to wear the Big Blue. Of course, I'm very excited to play in the Labour Day Classic against Saskatchewan. It will be an experience I’ll never forget. Thank you for your wishes.
Congratulations on signing with the Blue Bombers!!! We are looking forward to seeing you in the Blue and Gold. How does it feel to have the opportunity to try out for 1 of the 2 teams in the league that are without a bonifide starter? What attributes will you bring to the field from play to play?
It’s a great feeling to have the opportunity to start for the Blue Bombers. I'm a guy who can throw the football pretty far and consider myself a pretty accurate passer, but who also has the ability to use his legs. I'm also a hard worker who loves to be successful.
Steven, what have you been doing this offseason? Where is home?
My home town is Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Now, I'm training and working odd jobs here and there.
Steve, being a backup last season, is there any things you know you took from that whole experience and learnt from or is it an overall just being around a winning team type of thing?
Being a back up has its benefits, you prepare to start, therefore; you think as a starter. So your mind continues to grow every week. Yes, being on an winning team is a plus that helps you learn.
Welcome to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Steven, for many seasons now; you have been a #2 or #3 QB following Ricky Ray and Darian Durant. You have a great opportunity here to become our #1 guy. Tell us, what can the fans expect from you coming into training camp?
Yes, being behind Durant and Ray gave me a chance to see two great QBs play first hand. I learned a lot from those two. The fans can expect me to come in and work very hard to give myself the opportunity to be an elite QB in the CFL.
Steve, welcome to Winnipeg. You've stepped into a real opportunity for significant playing time. Are you prepared for the challenge? Do you feel that you can be the QB & leader that this team has been waiting for quite some time now?
Good luck this season.
Yes I’m ready for the challenge and o fcourse. Successful QB’s are great leaders. I'm striving for success here and really look forward to what we are going to be bringing in 2010.
How familiar are you with Paul’s offence and how much does that help you coming into training camp?
I’ve been a part of Coach LaPo's Offense for 2 years now. It’s great because I get to pick up where I left from last season as far as developing with in the offence.
Let’s say you unfortunately do not get the starter’s job in training camp, will you be okay playing behind another guy or want to go somewhere else?
That's a great question. I'm coming to compete for the starting job and if I'm not the starter I will wait until the team needs me. I’m a team guy first.
Welcome to the Big Blue Steven! Quarterbacks that can run in the CFL are certainly a valuable asset, but they seem to become more hesitant to run once they become a starter. If you get the starting job, what are your thoughts on using your feet as much as your arm to make plays?
I like to look at my ability to run as a bonus. I love to throw the ball and get other guys involved, but if I have to use my legs to create big plays, then I don't mind running. I do what ever WINS the game.
You’re now a Blue Bomber Steve, which means you dislike the green! No, I’m kidding, it’s a fun rivalry, but are you aware of how intense it is and how longstanding it is?
Yes I am. Its like a rivalry game in college, that’s what we all say. It’s a great atmosphere.
