Each week a Blue Bombers player will answer questions from fans. This week, Offensive Lineman Glenn January steps up to answer your questions.
Glenn,
Where are you right now?
I am currently in my home town, Houston Texas.
You’re spending the holiday season there?
Yes, this is where all my family and childhood friends are so it really is nice to get to spend some time celebrating American thanksgiving and Christmas with them.
What have you been up to since the season ended?
Well I drove down to my family’s cabin in Winter Park Colorado and took about a week and a half to just rest and spend some time away from the rest of society. No TV, no computer, no cell phone just some good books, good tunes, and nature.
Did you watch the Grey Cup? What were your thoughts?
I could not get the game down here in Texas, but my current Blue Bomber teammate and former Saskatchewan teammate Steve Morley texted me when things happened throughout the game. As a former Roughrider let’s just say that I was pleased with the outcome.
Have you ever been involved in a game where a mistake of that magnitude cost you a big game?
I have been in some games that we have won and lost due to stupid mistakes but never anything close to the magnitude of the mistake made in the Grey Cup.
You’re spending your offseason in Winnipeg, why?
Well my wonderful girlfriend, Glenna, moved to Winnipeg from Toronto and we both enjoyed the city so much that we decided that we would like to become year round residents.
What do you plan to do all winter?
I am currently looking into getting a job that will allow me to utilize my university degrees in business, finance and marketing. I also plan to train with some of my teammates and there have been rumors that we will be starting up a Blue Bomber hockey team!
Hockey, you can skate?
Does a bear poop in the woods?
Just looking at last season briefly, what was wrong with the offence in your opinion?
Rome was not built in a day and neither were any of the premier offences in the league. We had basically an all new group on our side of the ball and sometimes people take for granted the amount of time it takes for a unit to mesh.
How close is this team to being a Grey Cup contender?
I think that we are close. Not very many people realize that we beat seven of the eight teams in the league last season. As anyone in the locker room will tell ya, we are just a couple of pieces away.
What is your best moment from 2009 on or off the field?
The best moment from 2009 had to be the game in B.C. when we rushed for over 400 yards. As an offensive lineman you can’t ask for a better game.
What are you looking forward to most about the 2010 season?
I am very much looking forward to getting back on the field and getting the bad taste out of our mouth.
We ask all the players about their College playing days, you played at Texas Tech, what was that like?
It was a fantastic experience. My father played offensive line there and as a result I grew up always wanting to play for the Red Raiders.
Most famous guy you lined up against?
Mario Williams.
Best experience from playing at such a big school?
Well the best experience would be my last game at Tech in the Insight bowl in Arizona. After falling behind 38-7 with 7:47 remaining in the third quarter, we rallied to score 31 unanswered points to send the game to overtime where we later won. It still remains the greatest comeback in college football history.
You’re a young guy but have played on three CFL teams already (Riders, Argos, Bombers), has it been tough bouncing around? What was it like playing in Toronto and Saskatchewan?
It was tough for me at first when I got traded from Toronto to Saskatchewan. As a rookie in Toronto I had formed a lot of solid friendships with several of my teammates. At the end of last season in Regina, when I became a free agent, I was ready to explore my options.
You’ve played with quarterback Michael Bishop on all three of your teams now, what are your thoughts on him?
Michael is one of the most gifted athletes that I have ever played with. His consistency is often brought into question and I feel that it is somewhat unfair. This last season in Winnipeg he was put in a very tough spot with his late arrival to the team. In Saskatchewan, he basically took all the blame for a team that was devastated by injury and proved to be erratic as a result. He was also brought in mid season there. In Toronto he went 11-1 as a starter but was cursed in the eastern final by his “star” receivers not following their assignments.
Glenn, in the dressing room you offensive lineman have the corner area and for the better part of the season white tape outlined the offensive lineman ‘area’, explain how that came about.
Well it all started when my next locker neighbor Brendon Labatte complained non stop about me dropping pre wrap in what he deemed to be “his area”. One day I had finally had enough and decided to lay down tape on the ground so that there was no question whose “area” my trash was in.
What is your favorite part about playing in Winnipeg?
Well Winnipeg kind of takes the best parts of my experiences in Regina and Toronto. The city has so many passionate fans but is still big enough that if you want to blend in you can.
You’ve become very involved in the community, always out supporting groups and out at Moose games etc, you even co-host the Spin Zone now, how do you like that?
I have really enjoyed my time in Winnipeg so far. The city just has so many good things to offer. When Doug asked me to turn my recurring guest spot into a full time co-host spot I was thrilled. Doing the show is fun because it is an opportunity for us to take on some of the pressing issues in the Blue Bomber organization and the rest of the sporting world.
Anything you’d like to say to the fans before you go?
I would like to thank the fans for all their support through the year. No one is happy with the way the season ended but we are all going to do everything in our power to make sure that next years results are better.
