NOV 1 GAME SUMMARY VS MONTREAL

November 01, 2009

In a game that meant more to the home team Alouettes than the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers, that feeling may have shown somewhat as the Alouettes beat the Bombers by a score of 48-13 at Molson Stadium in Montreal.

The Bombers picked up a big break right off the opening kick-off as Montreal’s Larry Taylor fumbled the ball inside his own 20-yard line, turning it over to the Bombers. The offence wouldn’t be able to put it in the end zone though and had to settle for an Alexis Serna field goal.

The Alouettes were able to answer back though as Anthony Calvillo and Avon Cobourne were able to drive the Als down the field for a Damon Duval field goal to tie the game at 3-3.

After the Bombers were forced to punt, however, the Alouette offence came out to show why they are so feared in the league. Larry Taylor set up the Als with great field position with a big punt return and from there it took just three plays for Anthony Calvillo to hit Brian Bratton on a 24-yard touchdown to make the score 10-3 Montreal.

Nearing the end of the first quarter the Montreal offence would continue to roll as Anthony Calvillo brought them down to the red zone yet again. He wouldn’t be able to put it in the end zone though and the Alouettes would settle for a Damon Duval field goal to make the score 15-3 Alouettes.

The Bombers picked up their initial first down of the game with 9-minutes to go in the first half, but were unable to build on it, punting the ball just two plays later.

The Alouettes wouldn’t waste the opportunity to capitalize as Anthony Calvillo engineered a touchdown drive to put the Als even farther ahead. Calvillo moved the ball almost exclusively through the air down to the Winnipeg 19-yard line and from there he hit Andrew Hawkins on a 19-yard pass for the touchdown. The score put Montreal ahead 22-3 with 4-minutes to go in the first half.

After another Bomber two and out the Alouettes got the ball back with just over two minutes to go in the half. Anthony Calvillo did exactly what he had been doing all half as he moved his offence down into Winnipeg territory. Montreal wouldn’t pick up the touchdown, but Damon Duval’s third field goal of the game made it 25-3 Montreal with 1:25 to go in the first half.

The Bombers were at least able to pick up a little momentum going into the half as Michael Bishop put the Bombers in range for Alexis Serna to come out and hit his second field goal of the game. The field goal sent the Bombers into the half trailing Montreal
25-6.

When the second half finally got underway the Bombers came out and looked like a different team on their opening drive. After a Titus Ryan kick return, Michael Bishop took just one play to hit Ryan on a 65-yard touchdown pass to cut the Alouettes lead to 25-13.

Larry Taylor continued to kill the Bombers though as he took the ensuing kick-off all the way to the Winnipeg 40-yard line. That kick return led to a fourth Damon Duval field goal and made the score 28-13 Montreal.

Nearing the end of the third quarter the Bombers were finally able to put together somewhat of a sustained drive, but it stalled at the Montreal 40-yard line. Alexis Serna came out to attempt the field goal, but his attempt was wide right and went right into the hands of Larry Taylor. Taylor broke two tackles and then found some open field and was gone 113-yards for the missed field goal return touchdown. The score put the Alouettes ahead 35-13 with under 2-minutes to go in the third quarter.

With ten minutes left in the fourth quarter the Winnipeg Blue Bombers decided to play it conservative in preparation for their final game of the season against Hamilton and pulled Michael Bishop in favour of Casey Bramlett.

With seven minutes to go in the fourth quarter Montreal added another touchdown for insurance as Avon cobourne took a handoff and scampered untouched into the end zone. The touchdown made the score 45-13 Montreal.

That touchdown allowed the Alouettes to cruise to a 48-13 win over the Bombers and allowed them to regain some of their momentum heading into the playoffs. The Bombers however will have to refocus and get mentally prepared for next weeks game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to see who will get a home playoff game.
