Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive lineman Obby Khan will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming Arctic Circle Youth Leadership and Motivation Conference in Repulse Bay, NU. The conference takes place from March 12-13 and Obby will be there from the March 10-16.
The Tusarvik School Student Council is organizing this conference and the intention is to engage youth, ages 12 to 25, in positive activities, while helping them to realize their potential. They also hope to send the message that although one may experience hardships, with perseverance and motivation, one can succeed and accomplish one’s dreams.
Many of the youth in Repulse Bay, NU, have obstacles in their lives that could prevent them from fulfilling their goals. Drugs, alcohol, domestic violence, and a high suicide rate, are all prevalent in many Inuit communities. Many of their students are also from low-income families.
“It’s an honour to go up there and speak to these kids, and share my stories,” said Khan.
“I’ve had struggles with my health but have been able to persevere and live my dream of playing in the CFL. I want to show these kids that dreams are a reality and I think this will be a great experience for me. I hope I can help.”
