A number of Winnipeg Blue Bombers made an appearance at the Austin Street Festival on August 31 and left feeling as though they made a difference in the community. Long-snapper Chris Cvetkovic and offensive lineman Glenn January along with their teammates Shawn Gallant, Pierre-Luc Labbé, Dorian Smith and Yvenson Bernard attended the ‘Spirit in the Sky’ Austin Street Festival in the North Point Douglas neighbourhood.
The festival is meant to revitalize North Point Douglas which is known as a low income neighbourhood with a population of 2255 – 65% of which are female lone parents. The festival featured a barbeque, prizes, local band WHY, games for kids and the very popular Dunk-a-Cop. On top of all that, the Bomber players walked around and mingled with all those in attendance.
For January, who takes a lot of time throughout the year to attend many community events, the event opened his eyes to something he never would have been exposed to.
“It was the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers,” says January.
