QB Depth Chart a Work In Progress

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback depth chart remains a mystery and very much a work in progress.

The club announced Friday that veteran pivot Kevin Glenn – acquired last September from the Montreal Alouettes the same day Drew Willy was traded to the Toronto Argonauts – has been released just over one month before he was to become a Canadian Football League free agent.

The announcement came just a couple of days after the club agreed to terms with Dom Davis on a two-year extension and with contract negotiations with Matt Nichols still ongoing.

“The decision was made to grant Kevin the opportunity to explore other options after we informed him we weren’t going to be able to immediately come to an agreement contractually,” said Bombers General Manager Kyle Walters in a statement.

“Given Kevin’s longevity and veteran status in our league, we felt it was appropriate and the right thing to do given the circumstances.”

The moves this week speak of the Bombers faith in Davis and his potential to move up the depth chart from the No. 3 spot he has had since arriving here from the Calgary Stampeders just prior to the 2015 season.

At 27, he is 10 years Glenn’s junior. But that said, his resume is particularly thin compared to that of the 16-year veteran. Davis has one CFL start in his career and did not throw a single pass in 2016.

At the same time, the release of Glenn means the club is still allotting a good chunk of change for the starter’s gig and could be a hint at where negotiations stand with Nichols. After replacing Willy in late July, Nichols helped lead the Bombers on a seven-game win streak, had arguably his best game of the season in the West Semi-Final loss to the B.C. Lions and was 10-4 overall as a starter.

He was named the Bombers Most Outstanding Player after passing for 3,666 yards and 18 touchdowns while rushing for six more scores.

If a deal can’t get done, Nichols would be one of eight QBs with CFL experience scheduled to become free agents on February 14th, along with Darian Durant (Saskatchewan), Mitchell Gale (Saskatchewan), Dan LeFevour (Toronto), Danny O’Brien (Ottawa), Jacory Harris (Hamilton), Jeff Mathews (Hamilton) and Thomas DeMarco (Edmonton).
