He Wore It Well:

Carl Cronin, HB, WR, LB – 1932-33

Carl Cronin came to Winnipeg as its first ‘import.’ A product of the powerhouse University of Notre Dame and in his two years with the football club – in the days before they were known as the ‘Blue Bombers’ – played halfback, wide receiver, linebacker and also coached the team. As Jack Matheson wrote in his ’60 Years and Running’ historical book on the Bombers published in 1990, Cronin ‘did everything but the team laundry’ while guiding the club to a 3-3-1 record in the regular season and 3-1 in the playoffs, including a Western Final victory over the Calgary Bronks in 1933, the same team he would take over two years later in 1935.

FYI:

‘Mini’ Mack Herron’s story – both in his two years with the Bombers and afterward – is a tale of successes on the field and failure off it. Standing just 5-5, Herron came to the Bombers from Kansas State after being drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 1970. Herron was the West Division’s leading rusher, a CFL All-Star and the Bombers Most Outstanding Player in 1972 but was released in the offseason after being arrested in Winnipeg after police found marijuana and traces of cocaine in his apartment. He headed to the New England Patriots next and was outstanding, setting a then-NFL record for all-purpose yards in 1974. In 2009 he was named by the Patriots Hall-of-Fame nomination committee to the club’s 1970s All-Decade Team as a kick returner.

But after his playing career Herron was arrested 20 times, mostly for drug offences, before passing away in 2015.
