He Wore It Well: Eddie James, 1934-38

His nickname was ‘Dynamite’ – his son Gerry, who also played for the Bombers, would be known as ‘Kid Dynamtie’ – and James was an explosive two-way player for the club in the early days of its inception.

He began his career in Saskatchewan with the Regina Pats and Roughriders before moving to Winnipeg to play with St. John’s College in 1932. He was a member of the Winnipegs in 1935 – the first Western-based team to capture the Grey Cup – and was one of the first inductees into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. The leading rusher in the West Division is annually awarded the Eddie James Memorial Trophy.

FYI:

Less Browne was already a two-time CFL all-star with Hamilton by the time he landed in Winnipeg in 1989. And what he did in Bomber colours was establish himself as one of the best cornerbacks in CFL history. Browne played 51 regular season games as a Bomber and had 27 interceptions, including 14 in 1990 as the club set a CFL record that still stands with 48 picks. He was traded to Ottawa in 1992 for Gerald Wilcox and would be an all-star again with the Riders in 1992.

Notable:

After his playing days, Bud Irving turned to officiating, working junior and intermediate games and then as a CFL official, retiring his whistle after working the 1960 Grey Cup game… Jon Ryan was dominant from the moment he stepped onto the field with the Bombers after being a third-round draft pick in 2004. His punts sailed high and long and he turned his two years with the Bombers into an NFL career (Green Bay, 2006-07, Seattle, 2008-present) that has made him one of the best in the business.
