WHSFL: Week 6 Preview

The leaves have fallen, there is frost/snow on the pumpkin and Halloween is just a couple weeks away. All that means one thing in the Winnipeg High School Football League:

Now the real fun begins.

The WHSFL heads into Week 6 action Wednesday night with junior varsity action, and varsity following on Thursday and Friday.

Here are some of the storylines to keep an eye on:

  • Can anyone put a roadblock up in front of Vincent Massey-Brandon Vikings running back Mack Adams? Adams rumbled for 313 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s win over West Kildonan and – get this – now has an incredible 1,280 yards along the ground in just five games.
The Vikings are a perfect 5-0 and travel to River East this week in the hopes of extending their win streak while keeping pace with the St. Paul’s (AA) Crusaders, also 5-0.
  • The battle for top spot in the Potter Division (AAA) continues to be a three-school scrap with St. Paul’s, a perfect 5-0, at Garden City, Vincent Massey Trojans ( 4-1) home to Murdoch MacKay, and the Grant Park Pirates (also 4-1) playing host to the winless Dakota Lancers.
  • Two quarterbacks in the Potter Division are about to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in passing: Massey’s Anreas Dueck, who has thrown for 14 TDs against just two interceptions, is at 963 passing yards while Murdoch MacKay’s Landon Wilkinson is at 930.
  • And in the Currie Division (A) the Dryden Eagles look to extend their winning streak to six as they play host to the Tec Voc Hornets. Dryden is led by two ball carriers who are churning out yards as Jarrett Hicks has 618 yards and 12 TDs while Liam Wrolstad has added 547 yards and 10 scores.
