Rifles fall 58-6 to Regina Thunder

The Winnipeg Rifles were silenced Saturday night at Investors Group Field and, in the process, had their win streak abruptly halted at one.

The Regina Thunder rolled up 58 points while limiting the Rifles to just two field goals in a 58-6 victory that improved the visitors to 2-1. The Rifles, fresh off last week’s win over the Edmonton Wildcats, fell to 1-2.

Winnipeg actually led 6-3 at one point in the first quarter thanks to two field goals by Ian Lee, but that’s when the Regina offence came to life. The Thunder would finish with 572 yards net office – including 416 through the air – while scoring seven touchdowns.

Michael Ritchott

Thunder QB Sawyer Buettner led the visitors by completing 18 of 27 for 296 yards and four TDs, while his replacement, Brock Sich, was good on all six of his passes for 120 yards and two more scores. Kris Calcutt led Regina with three touchdowns, Kristiane Desautels had two with singles from Alex Thompson and Victor St. Pierre-Laviolette.

Regina’s defence also did a solid job limiting the effectiveness of star running back Michael Ritchott, who was held to 61 yards on 12 carries and 22 yards on one pass reception. Kai Madsen was the most productive of the Rifles offensively, pulling in four passes for 93 yards.

These two teams will meet again next weekend in Regina at Leibel Field as part of the Labour Day weekend, with kickoff going at 8 p.m.
