Training Camp Journal – Day 1

Trent Corney’s Training Camp Journal

May 29, 2016

First day with all the team out there, about 85 guys in total, and it really wasn’t too bad. There wasn’t a ton of reps out there, but I made every rep count.

Having the veteran guys around actually made me feel a lot more comfortable. (Jamaal) Westerman, Louie (Richardson) and Nate Collins… those guys made me feel a lot more comfortable as it went on.

IMG_8824Nate came up to me on the sidelines and said, ‘Yeah, man… I can already tell you’re thinking way too much. You already know what you’ve got to do because you’ve been playing football for awhile. You’re an athlete. Don’t over-think things.’ He’s right because when I over-think things I really stink.

Westerman is a really good player and when I ask him stuff he’s so helpful. I saw him on tape… I pictured him to be a mean guy, but he’s actually a really, really good guy.

Yesterday in the locker room one of the veterans – I’m not going to say his name – challenged me to a one-armed push-up competition. It was pretty cool… the whole locker room got around us. I won. I got something like 30 reps with one arm. But for the rest of the day I was walking around and my one arm was all pumped and the other side was flat.

I’m trying to make friends here. Obviously, I’m trying to get better at football, but the more friends I make the more comfortable I will be. Overall, that will help me play better.

It’s like the first day of school. Once you get over that anxiety of meeting people and getting adjusted you feel more comfortable.

Defensive end Trent Corney was the Bombers first pick, 9th overall, in the 2016 CFL Draft. A product of Brockville, Ont., he played his college ball at the University of Virginia.

Bluebombers.com will chronicle Corney’s daily battles through training camp, from the highs on the field to the transition from the college to the pro game.
