Rookie Camp Journal – Day 1

Trent Corney’s Rookie Camp Journal

I got here Tuesday at about 11 a.m. and I had a direct flight from Ottawa… it was lovely getting that direct flight.

They’ve got us staying at the dorms at the University of Manitoba, about an eight-minute walk from here and I have a really cool roommate, Duron Singleton. He played linebacker at Mizzou (Missouri) and he’s been a good friend to me the first couple of days.

I had a bit of anxiety today. The big thing for me is I need to get adjusted, not only to the football culture, but just being in a new city.

IMG_8635I remember when I first went to Virginia… those first few months I was homesick. It was quite an adjustment. I’m a lot more mature now, but it’s still an adjustment. It’s not just the football that’s different, it’s being in a different city and a different lifestyle.

Having a roommate that is older helps. It’s nice just to have someone to talk to, someone to vent to. That’s huge.

It was definitely an adjustment on the field out there today. I haven’t played Canadian ball since high school and it’s different than the American game. I lined up offside a few times today in practice, but I don’t think it will take too long to get adjusted.

A lot of people think Canadians are not as good as Americans. I played in America for four years and I definitely think I can play with these guys. Today made me believe that and that I can definitely do what I need to do to see some field this year.

Defensive end Trent Corney was the Bombers’ first pick, 9th overall, in the 2016 CFL Draft. A product of Brockville, Ont., he played his college ball at the University of Virginia.

Bluebombers.com will chronicle daily Corney’s battles through training camp, from the highs and lows on the field to the transition from the college to pro game.
