Bombers Honour 1988 Grey Cup Champs

The Winnipeg Football Club welcomes back to Winnipeg the 1988 Grey Cup team, October 31– November 2, to honour and celebrate the organization’s 9th Grey Cup Championship.

The 1988 Grey Cup Championship game had a definite western feel to it as Canada’s biggest sporting event returned to the nation’s capital, and for the first time in history two teams outside of Ontario and Quebec battled for CFL supremacy. And for the first time in Grey Cup competition, a .500 team in the regular season took home the coveted prize.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, underdogs heading into the game, never held the lead against the B.C. Lions for the first 57 minutes of regulation, but with 2:55 remaining, Trevor Kennerd booted a 30-yard field goal to give the Bombers a 22-21 lead – a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The weekend’s events, presented by Winnipeg’s own Salisbury House, will feature fan events, team only events and will culminate during halftime on November 2when the team is honored during the final regular season game of the inaugural year at Investors Group Field.

On the evening of November 1, fans will have a chance to meet selected members of the team who will be available at the Bomber Store at Investors Group Field for an autograph signing from 5: 30 pm – 7:00 p.m. In attendance will include Sean Salisbury, Chris Walby, Bob Cameron, Trevor Kennerd, James Murphy and James West, along with other members of this Grey Cup winning team.

To honour the team, the Blue Bombers will wear their new third jerseys on November 2nd.  Premier replica jerseys are available at the Bomber Store or by clicking here.
