Bombers sign non-import Howell

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed non-import receiver/returner Markus Howell.

Howell (5-10, 188, Texas Southern, DOB: April 21, 1975 in Winnipeg, Manitoba) returns to the Blue Bombers after having last played with Winnipeg from 2000-2004 where he spent time as a receiver, defensive back and returner.  His most successful season in blue and gold came in 2002 when he started every game and caught 38 passes for 415 yards and a touchdown – good enough for third on the team.  Howell signed with the Ottawa Renegades in 2005 and caught 25 passes for 417 yards and a career-high three touchdowns.  He was selected by Calgary in the second round (12th overall) of the 2006 Ottawa Renegades dispersal draft where he was used primarily as a returner.  In four years with the Stamps, Howell was twice named Special Teams Player of the Week and had a 96-yard punt return touchdown in 2007.  He currently sits in fifth place on the Stampeders’ all-time list with 2,030 punt-return yards.

The club has also added import defensive back Deon Beasley to the practice roster.

Beasley (5-10, 180, Texas, DOB: September 19, 1987 in Orange, Texas) played in 44 games with the Longhorns over his four-year career including 12 starts.  He finished his collegiate career with 99 tackles, three interceptions, two sacks and two forced fumbles.  Beasley also spent time returning kicks for the Longhorns.

The Blue Bombers have also released non-import wide receiver Jabari Arthur.
